I am reasonably certain that the 1881 census of David G Petty is in fact George Petty Davis. George went by his fathers name of Petty until his Marriage when he reverted to his birth name of George Petty Davis. I speculate that George may have told the person filling in the census that his real name was Davis and they misheard him.George and his brother Harry Petty walked from their uncle's home in Tingewick to Yorkshire in search of work and finally settled in SuttonUponDerwent where George got work as an agricultural labourer and later as a shepherd.

Before the 2nd World War after leaving school she was in service as a maid at a doctor's house in Fulford York. During the war she worked as a land army girl on the farm in Newton Upon Derwent that her father then ran. After the war she married Claude Hanley and lived on The Oval, Pocklington. At first in a prefabricated house which I believe was number 61 and then after a few years moved a house at number 28.
In the early 1960s she got a part time job a Derwent Plastics in Stamford Bridge and in the late 60s she took a job at Woldhaven, an old peoples home on Burnby Road Pocklington, where I believe she was much loved by the residents. Here is a photograph of her as a land army girl outside the farm house in Newton with her dad Joe, mother Annie and niece Margaret. These are studio pictures taken of her around the same time. Here she is in around 1949 with my dad Claude and me(Kenneth) at Butlins Filey and here with dad, me and my sister Susan at my uncle Owen Hanley's wedding in Everingham in 1956.

The Will of John Hanley in which he leaves all his belongings to his wife Elizabeth. I have not transcribed this as it is in Latin which makes the recognition of the words far more difficult.
The Will (transcription and image here) of Elizabeth herself in which she leaves the residue of her belongings to her son Robert Hanley
The Will of Sir James Edwards who's children are mentioned in Elizabeth's Will and which leaves money to Elizabeth Hanley, his brother William's daughter and to her children. Judging by the wording of Elizabeth's will, the legacy given in Sir James' Will had still not been received more than 10 years after the death of Sir James. This Will gives us Elizabeth's maiden name as from it we know her Father's name. Other research on Sir James Edwards tells us that her father William Edwards was a lieutenant colonel in the army of King Charles I. I have included extracts of this research at the end of my transcription of Sir James' Will.

He married in 1944 and after the war worked at Eric Lees electrical shop in Pocklington. Part of his work involved delivering accumulators to the outlying farms. Pocklington had electricity, but it was some time before all the isolated farms got connected. In order to listen in, their radios had to be battery operated and with transistors yet to be invented, the radios consumed a lot of power. The accumulators were rechargeable lead-acid cells that powered the heaters of the valves (vacuum tubes). Eric Lees offered a weekly recharge and delivery service for these. I used to enjoy going out with my dad in the school holidays on his delivery round. Later after the farms got connected he worked in the shop eventually becoming shop manager.
Away from work he collected coins and a few other antique items in which he was extremely interested. He played cornet and trumpet with Pocklington Brass Band (at the front on the right in the picture) and was on the committee which successfully campaigned for the building of a swimming pool in the town.

In the 1841 census at the age of 15 Dennison was lodging with James Lears in Aughton probably as a labourer or farm servant.
The 1851 census has him married and living with his father and mother-in-law at 50 South End, Seaton Ross, employed as an agricultural labourer.
By the time of the 1861 census he is still an agricultural labourer living with his wife and four children at 81 South End, Seaton Ross
By 1871 he is a stoker at the gas works and living at 60 Cole Street, Clifton, York with his wife, four children and a nephew.
In the 1881 census, for which I do not have an image, he is back as an agricultural labourer and living with his wife and one son at Seaton Ross.
I do not have the 1891 census record but by the 1901 census, he was still working as an agricultural labourer and living at 41 South End, Seaton Ross with his wife

I was born at my Grandparents house at 53 Millfield Lane York and then after a short while moved to Pocklington where the family obtained a council Prefab at 61, The Oval. The prefabs have since been replaced by bungalows and many more houses have been built to the south and towards the grounds of Woldgate School however it was located here.
At around the age of seven we moved to a council semi on the Oval at no. 28. I went to Pocklington County Primary School until the age of 12 and then attended Woldgate County Secondary School.
. At around 14 I did a morning paper round for 7s 6d per week and also around this time my friends and I collected offcuts from a local timber yard which we chopped and bundled to sell for kindling.I left school at 16 with 6 'O' levels to take up a student apprenticeship with the Central Electricity Generating Board at a starting wage of £4 0s 6d per week. My decision not to cary on to 'A' level was influenced by the financial position of my parents. The apprenticeship included day release to college and I attended York College of Technology for several years with one year at Leeds College of Technology. I achieved an HNC in Electronics and Communications which was sufficient for the job I was aiming for. There was little point in progressing further as entry to the institute of Engineers had by then been blocked to anyone below degree level.
At around 18 or 19 I spent a few months playing rhythm guitar for the local group Roy and the Zeros. I joined along with Steve Rowley after the original rhythm guitarist and bass player left. This came to an end for various reason amongst which the periods during my apprenticeship on shift made it difficult to continue.
I spent my entire career working for the CEGB and National Grid (after privatisation) as a Telecommunications and Control Systems Engineer to 1st engineer level and took early retirement at age 55 but continued to work in the industry part time through agencies and self employed until the age of 69.

During World War II, Owen served as ground crew in the RAF in the UK and Burma (picture). If anyone asked what he did in the war he would say he was a pilot then after your response he would say 'yes I used to pile it here and pile it there'.
After the war he worked in a printing works in New Earswick, York and also developed his own small part time business printing on plastics. He was an accomplished piano player often playing in pubs in York and also a keen woodworker and made from scratch many items of furniture and ornaments of birds and mice which he exhibited and gave to family and friends.
Owen lived with his mother at 44 New Street, Pocklington until 1956 and his marriage to Joyce Withell in Everingham when they bought a house on Percy Road in Pocklington and he lived there for the rest of his life.

Richard was Married to Isabela Dennison on 03 Nov 1807 at Seaton Ross, York.
The 1841 census, shows him in Everingham working as an agricultural labourer and lodging with the Easingwood family.
In the 1851 census, he was living in Church Lane, Seaton Ross with his wife and son Edward and still working as an agricultural labourer.
I do not have an image of the 1861 census but this shows him as an agricultural Labourer living in South End, Seaton Ross with his wife Issabella.
His date of death is 22 Oct 1862 according to the records at the Borthwick Institute.Hanley - Richard 05 May 1825

I have very little information on Ronald I believe both before and after the war he worked on the buses in York.
I believe there was a rift in the family following his divorce from his first wife after which his visits were very rare however I remember my father Claude would visit him at his work in York from time to time and I believe on one occasion I went with him.
Here is a photograph taken at 44, New Street Pocklington. I believe this is a picture of Ron's wedding to his first wife in 1940. At the back from left to right,, there is Len Matthews, Ron's sister Sylvia Matthews, his brother Owen, mother Florence and father Walter. Seated is Ron and his wife Elizabeth M Orde.

Thomas died on 29 Oct 1776 according to records at the Borthwick Institute. We have as yet found no certain record of the birth of Thomas or of his first wife Emma Johnson. There are however records for a Thomas Hanley in Driffield. This is the only record so far found in Yorkshire of a Thomas Hanley born in the right year.
We know the age of Thomas from a cause paper (extract) brought against the vicar of Sutton upon Derwent that is held in the Borthwick Institute. This paper dated 1729 states 'that Thomas Hanley is a Labourer of 25 years old in Sutton-upon-Derwent' and he 'hath lived in the parish of Sutton upon Derwent unto for upwards of four years...' from this we know that he came from another parish. Phil Hanley organised a search in the parish records for Great Driffield and the seven surrounding parishes (Little Driffield, Kilham, Langtoft, Garton, Kirkburn, Hutton Cranswick and Skerne) by the East Riding Records Office, Beverley. This search was for the marriage and death of Thomas Hanley and found no records. This reinforces the probability that the Driffield Thomas moved from the area. In the absence therefore of any other likely candidate, I have decided to go with the Driffield Hanleys until more certain records are found

Walter Hanley at age 2 was living at Railway Cottage, West Green, Pocklington as recorded in the 1891 census In the 1901 census he is shown living with his mother and five siblings at 7 Victoria Terrace, Pocklington and by the 1911 census he was a railway clerk and still living with is mother, brother and two sisters at 16 Regent Street, Pocklington.
Walter enlisted in the Territorial Forces in May 1912 and in September of that year he married Florence Walker of Barmby Moor. His address at the time of enlistment was 13, Alma Terrace, Pocklington. Walter's medical record on joining gives his height as 5ft. 7 1/4in. He served throughout the war as a Private with occasional periods when he was Acting Corporal and Acting Sergeant. As far as I can determine he never served abroad despite signing an Imperial Service Obligation document in 1916 agreeing to serve outside the UK. In June 1919 he signed an agreement to continue serving, however he was discharged in Oct 1919 and awarded a weekly allowance due to his heart being affected 'attributable' (presumably to his military service) resulting in a 20% disablement.
After his service in the Territorial Forces, he was awarded the Efficiency Medal. This medal was awarded to men serving in the Territorial Forces for more than 12 years with war years counting double. By this time he was living in Barmby Moor.
In Kelly's Directory for 1925 (ref: Pocklington & District Local History Group) Walter is listed as a confectioner at 7 New Street but by the 1939 census taken at the start of World War 2 he is again listed as a railway clerk and is living with his wife, daughter and eldest son at 44, New Street Pocklington. Shortly after World War Ii in late 1948 he died at New Street after being ill for some time with what I believe was a heart complaint.
In this photograph, Walter is shown with most of his family. From left to right,, his wife Florence, with granddaughter Pauline in front, Walter, Sylvia his daughter, Sylvia's Husband Len, his middle son Claude, and youngest son Owen.

Other than her marriage we have as yet found no definite record giving her birth. There is a record for an Emmet Eubank who married a Christopher Johnson in Sutton Upon Derwent a few years before the marriage of Emmet Johnson to Thomas Hanley. As Emmet is an unusual name this could be her. However no death of Christopher Johnson has so far been found so this may be a red herring. In some of the records in which she appears she is nnamed as Emma however on most of the Baptism records of her children the name is recorded as Emmet. Emmett died on 27 Jan 1761 according to records at the Borthwick Institute.

I have no image for the 1841 census but in this she is living in Seaton Ross with her parents and two sisters.
By the 1851 census, she is married and living with her husband and her parents at 50 South End, Seaton Ross and Dennison is employed as an agricultural labourer.
In the 1861 census, she is shown as living with her husband and four children at 81 South End, Seaton Ross where her husband is an agricultural labourer.
By the time of the 1871 census, she is living at 60 Cole Street, Clifton, York with Dennison, four children and a nephew. Dennison is a stoker at the gas works
The 1881 census, for which I do not have an image, has her back in Seaton Ross with her youngest son and husband who is an agricultural labourer.
I do not have the 1891 census record but by the 1901 census she lives at 41 South End, Seaton Ross with Dennison who is still an agricultural labourer
